The best time to visit Playa del Carmen, excursion by excursion
The year, in four honest chunks
December to April — dry, busy, best
Reliable weather, seaweed at its lowest, and prices to match. Christmas to New Year and Easter are the two windows where I tell people to book excursions before they even land — the good departures on the full-day trips fill first. March adds spring break crowds on top.
May to July — hot, humid, seaweedy
The hottest stretch of the year, 30°C-plus with real humidity, and sargassum building toward its peak. This is when trip choice matters more than trip timing: cenotes, caves and Cozumel’s west coast all sidestep the seaweed entirely.
August to October — wet season proper
Hurricane season officially runs June to November, and this is its business end. In practice rain interrupts days more than it cancels them — one buggy reviewer, Annick, reckoned the rain made her trip more of an adventure, and having done that track wet, I agree. Early October is the quietest, cheapest moment of the whole calendar.
November — the sleeper
Seaweed drops away, the heat eases, and the December prices have not arrived. If I were picking dates with no constraints, I would pick November and say nothing to anyone.
Sargassum, without the tourism-board gloss
The seaweed season runs roughly April to October and peaks June to August. Playa’s central beaches get daily clean-up crews, which helps, but on a bad week you will still smell it before you see it. The workarounds are real, though: the cenote cluster 15–20 minutes south is fresh water that never sees sargassum, Cozumel’s leeward coast stays clear even in heavy years — the case for a Cozumel day trip in summer — and Río Secreto is underground, where the weather has never once been a factor. Crowds and prices
Priciest: Christmas–New Year, Easter, and March. Quietest: October, especially early. Excursion prices themselves move less than hotel prices, but availability does — the prices page shows what each trip costs and the itineraries page shows how to stack them once your dates are fixed.
Travelling June to August? Book Río Secreto for the day with the worst forecast. Wetsuit, helmet, headlamp — the rain can do what it likes.

When is Playa del Carmen cheapest and quietest?
October, especially the first half. The weather is a gamble but the crowds are gone. Excursion prices barely move across the year — the fixed numbers are on the prices page.
Does the rainy season ruin excursions?
Rarely. Rain tends to interrupt rather than cancel, the sea stays at 26–29°C, and two trips actually improve wet: the buggy tour gets muddier and more fun, and Río Secreto is underground regardless.
Is December a good time for the big day trips?
The weather is the year’s best; the queues are the year’s worst. Book the full-day trips ahead in the Christmas window — free cancellation means committing early costs nothing.
