What a full day actually looks like
Every big excursion from Playa follows the same skeleton: an early pickup on or near Quinta Avenida, a leg down highway 307, the site itself, a cenote or beach stop to cool off, lunch, and a drop-off before dinner. The variable is distance. Tulum is 45 minutes south; Chichén Itzá is about 2.5 hours west, which is why that day runs longest and starts earliest. Pickups drift — one Chichén reviewer waited an extra 30 minutes — so I never plan anything tight for the same evening.

Who each day suits
Chichén Itzá, $93. For anyone who wants the region’s main archaeological site done properly. The guides make this trip — reviewers name them individually — and the cenote swim breaks up the driving. It is a 12-hour commitment; my full review covers the early start and the extras to budget for.
Tulum, cenotes and Akumal, $76. The one I recommend most often, because it stacks a guided ruins walk, two cenote swims and a turtle snorkel into one day without the long drive. Isla Mujeres catamaran, $35. An open-bar boat day with a reef stop and a beach club, rated 4.1 by more than 3,000 people. Hot, loud and crowded — the price and the bar are the point. Read the catamaran review before booking it for a quiet anniversary.
The DIY option. A Cozumel day around the $38 round-trip ferry is the best self-organised full day from town: sailings run every hour or two from 6–7 a.m., the last returns leave 9–10 p.m., and you set your own pace. Take the earliest Chichén departure you can stomach. You do the 2.5-hour leg before the heat builds and walk the site in the cooler half of the day. Book the early slot, then sleep on the bus.
