Town versus zone
Playa is a town you walk: Quinta Avenida runs about 4 km, pedestrian the whole way, one block from the beach, with the town behind it. Most visitors never need a car — the case is made in full on the walkability page. Cancún’s hotel zone is a strip of resorts where dinner outside your hotel means transport. Neither is wrong; they are different holidays. If you plan to leave the resort most days, the town model works harder for you.
Money
In Playa’s tourist restaurants a main runs roughly 150–400 MXN, call it $8–20, and eating well off the avenue lands at the bottom of that range. Resort-zone pricing anywhere follows resort-zone logic. Excursion prices are identical from either base — the same six trips on the prices page cost the same $35 to $119 wherever you sleep; what changes is how long you sit in the van.
Beaches and seaweed
Both coasts get sargassum in season — roughly April to October, peaking June to August, with 2026 tracking heavy. Playa’s central beaches get daily clean-up crews, and Playa holds the better escape hatches: cenotes 20 minutes away and Cozumel’s clear west coast 45 minutes across the water. The excursion map, which is the real argument
Sitting mid-Riviera, Playa is closer to almost everything people fly here to do: Tulum’s ruins, Akumal’s turtles, the cenote cluster, Río Secreto 15 minutes south, and Cozumel without a transfer — the ferry terminal is at the end of the shopping street. The full-day trips all run shorter from here. Cancún’s home-turf trip is Isla Mujeres: the $35 catamaran sails from the Cancún area, though it offers pickup options that work from Playa — I just warn guests the bus leg is part of the deal.
